How do I remove verdigris (green gunk) from vintage jewelry?
Q. I sell vintage jewelry online auctions and occasionally run across pieces that have green gunky stuff called verdigris. Seems like it would be easy to clean off but isn't always, any ideas?
Asked by covetedcollectibles - Wed Jun 21 08:03:04 2006 - - 1 Answers - 1 Comments
A. Have you tried a very soft toothbrush and toothpaste yet? It works great for me whenever I did this problem and I had a lot of jewelry to clean after my mother passed away and I tried different cleaners too and there you have to be very careful not to damage the jewelry with cleaners. Vintage jewelry wasn't made to withstand harsh cleaners but toothpaste isn't as harsh as those cleaners are. I've cleaned all my jewelry using toothpaste except for my pearls that is. Also, have you tried taking a very soft toothbrush and just using a good bar of hand soap and brush the heck out of the jewelry? This also works for most pieces of jewelry too. Good luck cleaning up the verdigis on your vintage jewelry.

What is a good web site to find vintage Swarovski made jewelry?
Q. I'm looking for some vintage items of Swarovski jewelry made by the Swarovski Company. When I use any search engine, I get tons of sites that have Swarovski beads or handmade items using Swarovski beads, but that's not the jewelry made by Swarovski themselves. The Swarovski Club might be a site, but I'm not a member and I'm not planning on joinning since I'm really not a collector. Thanks for any help. The problem with ebay is that everyone is selling the jewelry they made themselves with Swarovski beads. Also most of the other sites are selling the new Swarovski jewelry. I'm looking for vintage Swarovski made jewelry. Thanks

A. You can try looking at eBay auctions, vintage clothing stores, flea markets, secondhand stores, antique stores, etc. That's where I tend to look. It usually requires a little footwork, but sometimes you can not only find what your looking for but a lot of other cool treasures to boot.

Q. Where can I find an identity and value site for vintage jewelry?

A. You would probably be better off taking it to an appraiser. A site cannot list every peice of vintage jewelry, and even if it was one where you send a picture of what you have, they really need to see it up close to tell the condition. Especially if it has stones in it. Do some price checking around your neighborhood to see what some charge for an appraisal. Or just take it into a store that does appraisals and ask if they know anything about your piece.

How can I tell if an article of clothing, jewelry, purses, or shoes is considered vintage?
Q. I have become intrested in shopping thrift stores for vintage items, such as clothes, jewelry, purses, and shoes. I want to know how to determine if a piece is in fact "vintage." Or how to determine what year it was manufactured. What are some things I should look for?

A. Generally speaking, clothing older than 25 years is considered to be vintage, though opinions vary on this definition.

A. OOOhhh. It's wonderful stuff! Vintage is generally 50 years old or less. There is some wonderful mid-century stuff out there. Lots of rhinestones, bright enamels, tri colored metals, loaded jangly charm bracelets. Try this: look up rubylane.com and check out some of their vintage stuff. It's like eye candy (for me, at least). Any of the antique malls that you might find around town will have nice vintage. I think you should look on rubylane just to see their prices. Some of the signed pieces are plenty pricey. But you can find wonderful things that are reasonable. Have fun ... but be warned, it can be habit forming!
